# Mapping processes to work types

Each process has exactly one **home work type**. The phase is derived from the work type, so a process's phase follows without any extra step.

| Process | Home work type | Phase |
| --- | --- | --- |
| P01 research-to-recommendation | Research and analysis | Research and understanding |
| P02 assess-current-state | Research and analysis | Research and understanding |
| P03 design-and-decide | Design and architecture | Design and creation |
| P04 write-document | Documents and content | Design and creation |
| P05 build-feature | Build (software and platform) | Build and delivery |
| P06 fix-defect | Build (software and platform) | Build and delivery |
| P07 migrate | Migration and restructuring | Build and delivery |
| P08 run-routine-upkeep | Operations and upkeep | Operations and upkeep |
| P09 audit-against-standard | Operations and upkeep | Operations and upkeep |
| P10 plan-a-program | Planning and management | Planning and coordination |
| P11 run-crm-engagement | Planning and management | Planning and coordination |
| P12 build-kb-topic | Knowledge | Knowledge and learning |
| P13 build-kb-article | Knowledge | Knowledge and learning |
| P14 promote-to-kb | Knowledge | Knowledge and learning |

P11 could equally home in Documents and content. It is placed under Planning and management because its distinguishing feature is the relationship and its next steps.

## Reading the table

- Every phase has at least two processes, so there is always a real choice to make at the route stage.
- No work type holds more than three processes.
- There is no process for the Unclassified phase. If the system cannot pick one by the end of stage 2, intake failed and the activity is recorded as Unclassified so the gap can be studied.

For how the system chooses, see [How intake routes](how-intake-routes.md). For the phases themselves, see [Phases and their routes](../work-families/phases-and-their-routes.md).
